Diving is considered a dangerous activity and many divers have lost there lives. Diving is unpredictable as the ocean can change rapidly and there are many dangers lurking in the deep. Stanford University is working on developing a robotic diver that uses less space then a ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). ROV technology has a lack of maneuverability and is cumbersome. This robot will allow scientists to study reefs and fragile ocean beds without disturbing or damaging the fragile environment. This robot is called Ocean One and will be able to dive and cooperate with a team of divers. The robot has been very cleverly designed and thought out, It has bimanual arms, stereoscopic vision, eight thrusters and hands combining force sensors and haptic feedback. Being able to feel touch is great for the operator in sensitive operations and this touch sensitive system will be one of the amazing features of this robotic diver. For more information check out the video.
